The Public Rental Board (PRB) is taking a firm stance against tenants who violate the terms of their tenancy agreements, particularly in light of recent drug-related issues within its properties. Housing and Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa stated that any breaches of these agreements will result in eviction, emphasizing the PRB’s obligation to maintain safe and peaceful living environments for compliant tenants.

In defending the policy, Nalumisa highlighted that tenants are required to sign agreements that explicitly prohibit behaviors such as drug use. He reiterated the position that the PRB has the authority to terminate agreements and relocate tenants who contravene these conditions. “We want peaceful estates for families,” he remarked, underscoring that those who adhere to the rules should not be disrupted by others who do not.

This strict enforcement policy aligns with actions taken earlier this year when the PRB evicted over five families linked to illegal activities such as drug use and violence. General Manager Timoci Naleba emphasized a zero-tolerance approach, stating the necessity of swift action to maintain community safety. “We must act decisively against any disruptive behaviors,” Naleba said.

Additionally, the PRB is exploring enhancements to security measures in its estates due to rising concerns over drug-related incidents. These efforts aim to bolster the safety and security of residents, including hiring more security personnel and installing surveillance systems as proactive measures against criminal activities.

While these evictions may appear harsh, they are part of a broader commitment to fostering community resilience. Upcoming outreach programs aimed at educating tenants about the dangers of drug abuse and violence reflect a comprehensive strategy to address the social issues affecting PRB communities. Such initiatives not only deal with immediate challenges but also aim to create a more supportive and secure environment for vulnerable families.

With ongoing focus on community involvement and education, there is hope for a safer future within PRB estates, continuously aimed at ensuring all families can reside in peace and security.
