PRB's Tough Stance: Ensuring Safety or Displacing Families?

PRB Takes Decisive Action to Combat Crime and Enhance Community Safety

The Public Rental Board (PRB) has taken critical steps in response to safety concerns within its communities, including the eviction of more than five families connected to illegal activities such as drug use and violence. General Manager Timoci Naleba reiterated the organization’s unwavering dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents. Recent incidents, including a prominent drug raid and a violent confrontation at a unit on Mead Road, have amplified the urgency of these measures.

Naleba announced a firm zero-tolerance policy for tenants involved in criminal behavior, affirming that those in violation will be promptly required to leave their homes. “We must maintain a safe environment for our community, and we will take decisive action against any disruptive behaviors,” he stated. Regardless of their past, all housing applicants—including those with previous criminal records—are given a fair opportunity for affordable housing, provided they comply with PRB’s regulations.

To enhance safety across PRB estates, management is considering improvements to security strategies, such as hiring more security personnel and installing surveillance systems. This initiative comes in response to recent issues, including tampering with surveillance equipment by local youths. PRB is also collaborating with law enforcement and community partners to tackle broader social challenges affecting residents.

These ongoing initiatives highlight PRB’s commitment to community safety and housing stability. Upcoming outreach programs aimed at training both youth and women will help raise awareness about the risks of drug abuse and violence, representing a shared responsibility towards building a secure and interconnected living environment.

Despite the existing challenges facing PRB estates, the proactive measures being implemented inspire a sense of optimism for the establishment of safer, more supportive communities for vulnerable families. The focus on community engagement reflects a commitment to not only addressing immediate safety concerns but also fostering sustainable solutions for the future.
