Joylyn John attributes her family’s safety during the recent earthquake in Port Vila to a heartfelt morning prayer her sister recited. While attending a training session for Live and Learn Vanuatu in Lautoka, Ms. John experienced anxiety when she couldn’t reach her family following the earthquake. Fortunately, by evening, she learned that her family was unharmed, although they had to evacuate to higher ground due to a tsunami warning.
Her sister recounted the frightening experience, confessing that the morning prayer gave her strength. The family eventually returned home after the tsunami warning was lifted. Despite their safety, the earthquake caused significant disruptions in electricity and water supply in Port Vila due to damage to three storage tanks and fallen power lines. The local utility company, UNELCO, is currently working on repairs.
Marie Dick, another participant in the training, anxiously awaited updates from her home in Emua Village following the earthquake. A text message from her husband reassuring her of their safety brought immense relief after a sleepless night. The National Disaster Management Office has informed residents that only medical flights will be operating, indicating ongoing challenges in the region.
This uplifting narrative highlights the power of faith during moments of crisis and the resilience of families in the face of natural disasters. It serves as a reminder of the strength communities can draw from one another and the importance of support networks in times of hardship.
