Joylyn John believes that a simple morning prayer protected her family during the recent earthquake that hit Port Vila on Tuesday. John, along with her colleague Marie Dick, is currently attending a weeklong training session at the Foundation for Rural Integrated Enterprises and Development (FRIEND) headquarters in Lautoka.
The quake caused significant concern for John as communication with her family became difficult due to network disruptions. She anxiously awaited updates until the evening when she finally learned that her family was safe. Although their home suffered no damage, the tsunami warning prompted her family to escape to higher ground until the alert was lifted.
Her sister shared how frightening the experience was, attributing her survival to the prayer she recited that morning. Fortunately, her family returned home after the tsunami warning was canceled, although they faced ongoing power and water supply issues due to extensive damage to infrastructure in Port Vila.
John mentioned that UNELCO, the main provider of water and electricity in the area, was working to restore services after damaged storage tanks and downed power lines were reported. Meanwhile, rescue teams have been actively engaged in aiding injured individuals caught in the wreckage.
Marie Dick, who lives in Emua Village just north of Port Vila, recounted the moment she learned about the earthquake. She received a message from her husband who informed her of the situation, and throughout the night, she remained anxious until she received confirmation that he was safe.
The National Disaster Management Office communicated that only medical flights would be operational, hoping to provide necessary assistance to those affected by this disaster.
This situation reminds us of the importance of community and faith in times of distress. While the people of Port Vila are facing significant challenges, the resilience showcased by families like the Johns, alongside the dedicated rescue efforts, offers hope for a swift recovery and rebuilding process in the affected areas.
