Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad has voiced skepticism regarding claims made by Savenaca Narube, the leader of the Unity Fiji party, and other politicians who he deems “irrelevant.” Narube had criticized the government for failing to address the rising cost of living, suggesting that while ordinary families face financial strain, the government is focused on increasing salaries for its officials.

Narube articulated concerns about escalating living costs, corruption, the widespread drug crisis, and the growing national debt. He stated, “The cost of living is rising yet the Minister of Finance says that the Government is unable to do anything and blames the people for their high expectations,” highlighting a perceived disconnect between the government’s actions and the realities faced by citizens.

In rebuttal, Professor Prasad pointed out that the economy is enjoying robust growth, with an estimated rate of 3.8 percent, and noted signs of improving inflation, rising investments, thriving businesses, and a revitalized tourism sector. He emphasized that the government’s policies are leading to a sustainable trajectory for national debt.

Professor Prasad contended that Narube had failed to present any substantive solutions to these pressing issues and suggested that Narube reassess the government’s economic data and policies before making critical remarks. He asserted that income levels are increasing and that living standards are showing signs of improvement based on the government’s recent initiatives.

On the issue of drug abuse, Prasad highlighted the establishment of a Narcotics Bureau to address drug-related challenges through partnerships with various sectors, including health services and community organizations. He underscored efforts aimed at enhancing awareness and promoting cooperation among families, schools, NGOs, and the government in tackling drug abuse issues.

In summary, while critics like Narube raise valid concerns about the cost of living and social issues, the government maintains that it is actively working to address these challenges and is witnessing positive economic developments. The hope is that through continued focus on key areas, there will be further improvements for families throughout the nation.

This article illustrates the dynamic nature of political discourse and the importance of presenting a balanced view of governance and economic performance. It also highlights that constructive criticism can lead to meaningful dialogue and policy improvements.
