Power Struggles: Lightning Leads to Major Outage on Viti Levu

A power outage occurred today on Viti Levu due to lightning activity, as confirmed by Energy Fiji Limited (EFL). The lightning affected a 132,000-volt transmission line, disrupting electricity supply from the Wailoa Power Station. EFL’s teams are diligently working to restore power safely while addressing the underlying issues.

As of 3:35 PM, EFL reported that around 80 percent of the power supply had been restored in the Central Division, with 20 percent recovery in the Western Division. However, given the current weather conditions, full restoration may take an additional two to three hours or potentially longer.

This incident echoes previous outages caused by severe thunderstorms and lightning strikes, showcasing the ongoing challenges faced by utility providers due to unpredictable weather patterns. EFL’s proactive response demonstrates their commitment to maintaining essential services even amidst such disruptions. The capability and efficiency of their teams to promptly restore power highlight the importance of robust infrastructure for community resilience.

As the situation evolves, EFL’s ongoing efforts assure residents of their dedication to ensuring reliable energy supply in the face of natural challenges.
