Opposition MP Premila Kumar has expressed significant criticism regarding Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s recent decision to manage the Immigration Department and Fiji Police Force within his portfolio. Kumar raised concerns that such a move might spread the PM too thin and questioned the confidence Rabuka has in his cabinet’s capabilities.

Kumar emphasized that if the government has faith in its collective talent, power should be distributed more evenly across the many ministers. According to her, effective governance hinges on focused leadership, and managing numerous critical portfolios—including Foreign Affairs, Climate Change, Environment, Civil Service, Information, Public Enterprises, and now Immigration and Police—could hinder the Prime Minister’s effectiveness.

She pointed out that Fiji is already grappling with urgent issues like rising living costs, healthcare deficiencies, drug-related challenges, law and order concerns, and a significant brain drain in vital sectors such as education and health. Kumar believes that consolidating power within the Prime Minister’s office distracts from adequately addressing these pressing challenges.

In defense of his decision, Mr. Rabuka explained that overseeing additional portfolios is a temporary measure due to ongoing investigations in the Immigration Department. He noted that it would only last during the period when Minister Pio Tikoduadua steps aside from his duties to allow for an impartial inquiry into the allegations surrounding unauthorized passports linked to the Grace Road human rights accusations.

Rabuka also pointed out that previous administrations had faced similar situations, recalling a time when one minister handled multiple roles without clear support, potentially illustrating the challenges and complexities of managing a government effectively.

This situation highlights the delicate balance between addressing the immediate operational needs of the government and ensuring that leadership is not overwhelmed by the breadth of responsibilities. As the outcome of the investigation unfolds, it is hoped that a stronger framework for handling sensitive matters will emerge, allowing for a more focused approach to governance in Fiji.

By encouraging a collaborative approach among ministers, citizens may witness more effective responses to the myriad issues facing their country.
