Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has made significant changes to the structure of government by bringing the Department of Immigration and the Fiji Police Force under his direct oversight. This decision follows an offer from Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua, to temporarily step aside amid ongoing investigations concerning the Department of Immigration. Rabuka’s authority for this move is grounded in Section 92(3) of the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji.
Despite this reassignment, Tikoduadua will maintain his role as Minister for Defence, overseeing the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and Veterans’ Affairs. He will continue to be supported by Mason Smith, who remains as the Permanent Secretary for Defence and Veterans Affairs.
These organizational changes will take effect starting tomorrow, marking a strategic shift in the handling of critical departments in Fiji’s government.
This realignment could be viewed as a proactive measure to enhance accountability and promote transparency during a time of scrutiny, which may ultimately strengthen public trust in government institutions.
