Opposition MP Premila Kumar has expressed serious concerns regarding Prime Minister’s decision to take on additional portfolios, notably Immigration and Police. She questioned the necessity of this move, suggesting it points to a lack of confidence in the capabilities of the current government team.
Kumar highlighted that every MP in the Coalition Government, except one, already holds a ministerial or assistant ministerial role, implying that power could be more effectively distributed among them. She argued that assigning these critical portfolios to other ministers could ensure thorough oversight and accountability, allowing each area to benefit from dedicated leadership.
The MP emphasized that managing multiple vital ministries—such as Foreign Affairs, Climate Change, Environment, Civil Service, Information, and now Immigration and Police—could overwhelm the Prime Minister, preventing effective governance. Each ministry requires focused attention, thorough planning, and the ability to swiftly address emerging challenges, which may not be feasible for one individual.
Moreover, Kumar pointed to a previous restructuring within the government that aimed to improve efficiency but has instead resulted in more administrative complexity without significant enhancements in service delivery. This, she argues, detracts from addressing pressing national issues including the rising cost of living, healthcare concerns, drug-related problems, law and order situations, and the brain drain affecting crucial sectors like education and health.
Kumar concluded by advocating for a governance approach that emphasizes delegation, accountability, and results, urging the Prime Minister to trust his team and empower them to manage their respective portfolios effectively rather than concentrating power in one office. She also called for the immediate removal of underperforming ministers, criticizing their focus on international travel over pressing domestic responsibilities.
