A small pothole discovered on the runway of Waiqele Airport has led Fiji Airports to suspend all Fiji Link flights to Labasa for the day. The chief executive of Fiji Airports, Mesake Nawari, emphasized that the safety of passengers and crew remains the top priority, and immediate repairs are being prioritized. He stated that a specialized team has been brought in to rectify the issue as quickly as possible to minimize inconvenience to customers.
Nawari expressed his regret for the disruption and advised affected passengers to consult their airline for the latest updates regarding flight schedules. He anticipates that the repairs will be completed by this afternoon, enabling flights to resume once the Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji (CAAF) inspector, along with FAL engineers, confirms the runway’s safety post-inspection.
This incident highlights the ongoing commitment of Fiji Airports to passenger safety, similar to previous actions taken in response to adverse weather conditions that have disrupted operations at other airports in Fiji. For instance, Fiji Link had previously announced flight suspensions due to severe weather earlier this year, demonstrating a consistent focus on safety.
In light of these efforts, passengers and stakeholders can remain hopeful that the swift actions being taken will ensure that the disruptions are short-lived, ultimately prioritizing safety while aiming to restore travel operations smoothly.
