The recent conclusion of the school rugby season has not dampened the enthusiasm of RKS Under-18 Deans championship-winning coach Isaia Naqicatabua, who is dedicated to the ongoing development of his players. He has formed a team to participate in the Rooster Chicken Fiji Sports Council Grassroots Fiji 7s tournament, aiming to provide his athletes with opportunities that extend beyond their secondary education.

Naqicatabua explained that this initiative is designed to keep his players engaged after finishing school and to expose them to new experiences that could lead to higher levels of competition. He emphasizes that maintaining their involvement in rugby is crucial for discipline, fitness, and focus, particularly during the festive season when distractions may abound.

“School stuff is done and most of these boys have completed their secondary school, so this is something to keep the boys occupied and to find open doors to greener pastures in rugby,” Naqicatabua said. His strategic choice to return to the shorter format of the game allows players to refine their skills while remaining prepared for the next chapter in their rugby careers.

Naqicatabua’s involvement underscores a larger trend in sports, with increasing emphasis on post-school player development. Grassroots tournaments like the one his team is entering are increasingly recognized as essential pathways for young athletes aspiring for scholarships or professional contracts, offering them a chance to secure a better future through rugby. The focus on player development not only nurtures talent but also fosters a sense of community and continuity in the sport.
