Following a devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck Vanuatu’s capital, Port Vila, on December 17, the country has seen a troubling rise in violence against women, as reported by local police.

The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has voiced growing concerns regarding gender-based violence in the wake of this tragedy, which led to the loss of 14 lives and left 265 individuals injured. Police Inspector Kami Toa highlighted that the family protection unit has handled nearly 50 assault cases, predominantly targeting women, as well as around 10 incidents of other forms of gender-based violence since the earthquake occurred.

Inspector Toa noted that both attempted rape and indecent assault against young women have been particularly alarming. He estimated that reported instances of violence in Vanuatu have risen by at least two percent since the disaster.

Additionally, the earthquake’s aftermath has contributed to a surge in thefts, as many in Port Vila have lost their homes and livelihoods, making it difficult to afford basic necessities. “People are going around stealing other people’s property,” said Inspector Toa, underscoring the increased desperation felt by residents following the closure of many local businesses.

The NDMO has reported that about 1,473 individuals have been displaced and 80,000 people affected as a result of the earthquake.

While the situation remains dire, it is crucial to recognize the efforts of local authorities and the community in addressing these pressing issues. The increased awareness and response towards gender-based violence could pave the way for more robust support systems for vulnerable populations in the future. With ongoing support and intervention, there is hope for Vanuatu to not only recover from this disaster but also strengthen its social structures against violence.

In summary, Vanuatu is grappling with a rise in violence against women following a recent earthquake, highlighting the challenges faced by the community in the wake of this natural disaster.
