Vanuatu’s authorities have recently reopened parts of the central business district (CBD) in Port Vila, marking a significant milestone more than two months after a devastating magnitude-7.3 earthquake struck the region on December 17, 2023. The earthquake resulted in the tragic loss of 14 lives, including two children, and caused widespread destruction that has severely affected local businesses and the community.
The quake inflicted notable structural damage, prompting plans for the demolition of several buildings, including the main market. Andrew Napuat, Vanuatu’s Minister for Internal Affairs, has indicated that essential work on roads, drainage, and sewage systems remains before the CBD can fully reopen.
A recent report from the Vanuatu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and the Department of Labour highlights ongoing challenges for local businesses, which are struggling to maintain staffing. Nearly half of the businesses surveyed expressed concern that they could keep their workforce for only one to two more months. In the aftermath of the earthquake, around 900 employees have already been laid off, primarily in the food and beverage sector, where employment has decreased by an alarming 71 percent.
Despite these difficulties, the community’s resilience is evident. No businesses have permanently closed, showcasing their determination to recover. VCCI has announced plans to work closely with government partners and regional organizations to accelerate support and recovery initiatives.
The impact of the earthquake also resonates within the education sector, where an estimated $8 million is needed to rebuild approximately 45 damaged schools. This situation is particularly concerning for about 700 displaced children. To address these challenges, initiatives have been launched, including the establishment of five child-friendly spaces to provide emotional support for over 550 affected children, highlighting the community’s strength in adversity.
While the road to recovery will be long, there is a palpable sense of hope among residents. Collaborations between local authorities and international organizations are gaining momentum, aiming to revitalize Port Vila. This strong spirit of solidarity exemplifies the community’s determination to overcome the hardships they face.
