A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck Port Vila on Tuesday, leaving around 80,000 individuals directly affected by the disaster, according to the latest updates from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The organization released a flash update highlighting the overwhelming situation at local hospitals due to structural damage, which has necessitated the use of triage tents for patient care.
The Vila Central Hospital (VCH) is facing severe operational challenges with its operating theatres currently out of service, significantly impeding critical healthcare delivery. Meanwhile, the maternity ward at VCH is functioning using limited secondary supplies.
The earthquake also inflicted considerable damage on two major water reservoirs, leading to a drastic reduction in access to clean drinking water for the affected population. In addition, gas pipelines near the Port Vila seaport suffered damage, posing environmental hazards in the area.
Immediate needs outlined in the update include healthcare support, emergency shelter, as well as access to clean water and electricity.
This situation underscores the urgent requirement for humanitarian assistance and support, with local communities coming together to aid each other during this challenging time. With global attention and resources being mobilized, there is hope for recovery and rebuilding efforts in Port Vila. It is through solidarity and cooperation that the affected region can emerge stronger from this crisis.
