In the wake of the devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck Vanuatu’s capital, Port Vila, on December 17, 2023, the community faces significant challenges while trying to recover. The earthquake tragically resulted in the deaths of 14 individuals, including two children, and has displaced nearly 1,500 residents from their homes, leaving many without jobs and essential resources.
Access to Port Vila’s central business district (CBD) remains restricted as recovery efforts continue, severely impacting local employment opportunities. Local journalist Charles Sumbe from the Vanuatu Broadcasting and Television Corporation has voiced concerns over a potential mass exodus of residents seeking relocation for greater stability. Estimates by the National Disaster Management Office suggest that it may take up to two years for the CBD to return to normal operations.
The effects of the quake extend into the education sector, with the Ministry of Education estimating that over $8 million will be necessary to rebuild 45 damaged schools, notably with Malapoa College accounting for a substantial portion of those costs. Around 700 children have been displaced, highlighting a critical need for temporary learning solutions. Polly Banks, the country director for Save the Children, reported that nearly 13,000 children will require support to navigate their transition back to education as recovery progresses.
