Papua New Guinea (PNG) is set to mark a significant milestone in its sports history as Port Moresby welcomes Round Two of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Pro League. This inaugural event is not only a first for the country but also a pivotal moment for football across the Pacific region. The Santos National Football Stadium will host eight of the area’s premier clubs from January 31 to February 8, engaging in matches played under fully professional conditions.
The arrival of the OFC Pro League in PNG underscores the ongoing efforts to elevate football standards within the nation and the region, fostering new opportunities for clubs and players. A diverse lineup of teams, including Auckland FC and South Melbourne FC, which are well-known in both New Zealand and Australian football, will converge in the capital, alongside clubs from Fiji, Vanuatu, Tahiti, and the Solomon Islands. This assembly of talent positions Port Moresby at the heart of Pacific football this week.
John Kapi Natto, President of PNG’s Football Association and a member of the OFC Board, expressed pride in hosting such a prestigious tournament. “It’s a dream come true for many,” he stated, highlighting the extensive planning and collaboration involved in bringing the league to PNG.
Although the transition to professional football has posed challenges for local teams, the competition is seen as a valuable learning experience. Hekari FC, PNG’s champions, will face a significant test as they adjust to the swift pace of play encountered during earlier matches in Auckland, where they recently faced tough competition. Currently, Hekari FC sits at the bottom of the standings and will need to perform strongly against Auckland FC, the leaders of the competition.
Assistant coach Jerry Allen reflected on the difficulties faced during their debut match, saying, “It was very difficult for us… We are all new but we have time to learn.” With the competition’s intensity higher than what local players are accustomed to, there is hope that they will adapt and thrive in the forthcoming matches.
Auckland FC is expected to arrive in Port Moresby on Wednesday, with additional teams from Vanuatu, Tahiti, and the Solomon Islands also set to make their way to the event as excitement builds. Local fans will have the unique opportunity to witness high-level Pacific football firsthand, with tickets available through Post PNG outlets and online. Additionally, the matches will be broadcast live on NBCTV and NBC Radio for fans outside the capital.
As the OFC Pro League unfolds this week in Port Moresby, it signifies a promising leap forward for football in the Pacific, paving the way for a fully professional future in the sport.
