Pope Francis delivered a powerful Christmas Eve message in St. Peter’s Basilica, emphasizing the importance of hope as he celebrated Jesus’ birth, highlighting that anyone can make a difference in the world. This year marks the 12th Christmas of his papacy, and alongside the festive celebration, he inaugurated the 2025 Catholic Holy Year, which is anticipated to attract around 32 million visitors to Rome.

In his sermon, the pontiff framed hope as a call to action, urging individuals not to remain stagnant but to challenge existing injustices and pursue meaningful change. He stated, “Hope calls us… to be upset with things that are wrong and to find the courage to change them.” The Holy Year, which runs until January 6, 2026, is a time recognized for peace, forgiveness, and special indulgences for pilgrims.

During the Mass, attended by approximately 6,000 in the basilica and an additional 25,000 watching outside, Pope Francis inaugurated a special bronze-panelled “Holy Door,” which is only accessible in Jubilee years. The Vatican estimates that around 100,000 pilgrims will pass through this door each day during the Holy Year.

The pope also reiterated his appeal to developed nations to consider the plight of low-income countries burdened by debt, advocating for reductions similar to those seen following calls for debt cancellation made by his predecessor, Pope John Paul II. He emphasized that the Jubilee signifies a time for spiritual renewal and the commitment to transforming the world for the better.

Despite recent health challenges, the 88-year-old pontiff appeared in good spirits, addressing the gathering with enthusiasm.

This Christmas season, Pope Francis’ message stands as a beacon of hope and encouragement for all to engage actively in improving the world, reminding us that each individual’s actions matter in the pursuit of justice and compassion.

In summary, Pope Francis’ Christmas Eve message highlights the themes of hope and renewal, particularly as the Catholic Church enters a pivotal Jubilee year aimed at fostering positive change for the marginalized. This timeless message of courage and action is relevant to us all, encouraging a more compassionate and just world.
