Brent Hill, the CEO of Tourism Fiji, has expressed serious concerns regarding the impact of pollution on the country’s tourism industry. Speaking during the Global Recycling Day event in Lautoka, he highlighted that an increasing number of visitors are hesitant to travel to countries with high pollution levels. Hill cautioned that if Fiji does not effectively address its waste management issues, it risks jeopardizing its vital tourism sector. He stressed the importance of combating plastic waste and fostering effective recycling practices, noting that Fiji’s appealing environment is a key factor in attracting tourists.

Supporting the I Recycle program, Hill underscored that achieving meaningful change requires a collective commitment from industries, communities, and individuals to adopt sustainable practices. He encouraged participants to utilize Global Recycling Day as an opportunity to recommit to environmental sustainability, emphasizing that this collective responsibility is crucial for everyone involved.

This perspective aligns with insights from other industry leaders, such as Amitesh Deo, founder of the Pacific Recycling Foundation. Last year, during Global Recycling Day celebrations, Deo pointed out the significant waste generation associated with hotels and resorts and called for a comprehensive approach to waste management. Both Hill and Deo envision a future where tourism development goes hand-in-hand with environmental responsibility.

Furthermore, the recent launch of the I Recycle program at Churchill Park underlines Fiji’s dedication to enhancing its waste management framework. Trade Minister Manoa Kamikamica highlighted that sustainable business practices are essential for economic growth and tackling environmental challenges.

These coordinated efforts across various sectors suggest a hopeful trajectory for Fiji’s future. By raising awareness and fostering responsible waste management, both residents and visitors can play a crucial role in preserving the natural beauty of the islands, securing its status as an inviting destination for generations to come.
