Confusion regarding polling venues has been identified as a significant factor contributing to low voter turnout in Rotuma during the last election. Residents reported being directed to unfamiliar districts, leading to frustration and disappointment. Vamarasi Atalifo, a senior resident of Hapmak Village in the Itu’ti’u district, noted that out of over a thousand registered voters on the island, only around 600 turned out to cast their votes.
Atalifo emphasized the importance of proper communication, stating, “People weren’t well informed about where to go.” He explained that upon arriving at their designated polling stations, voters were often instructed to travel to different districts entirely. This disruption raises concerns about inadequate voter education and the challenges faced by residents in remote locations when navigating the electoral process.
The issue was brought to light during a public consultation held by the Electoral Law Reform Commission, where local residents expressed their frustrations over the management of elections in their community. In response, Mesake Dawai, the manager of legal affairs at the Fiji Elections Office (FEO), encouraged voters to check the details printed on their voter cards, which specify their assigned polling venues and highlighted the necessity of updating personal information in advance.
As Fiji prepares for upcoming elections, including a comprehensive Polling Venue Assessment project aimed at improving voter participation and awareness, the FEO has recognized the need for ongoing efforts to enhance communication and electoral integrity. Dawai pointed out, “We usually go around and come back to raise awareness,” underlining their commitment to ensuring voters feel informed and confident about their voting rights.
Reflecting on past elections, particularly the challenges seen during the 2022 election, steps are being taken to foster a more supportive electoral environment. This includes an increased focus on community outreach and improved processes to guarantee that each citizen can engage meaningfully in the democratic process.
The sentiment from the local community, coupled with the FEO’s proactive measures, offers hope for a more inclusive and transparent electoral experience in the future. Engaging voters effectively and addressing their concerns is crucial in building trust in the democratic process and encouraging increased participation in future elections.
