The Fijian Government has yet to make an offer to former Deputy Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), Francis Puleiwai, following the release of a comprehensive 648-page report from a Commission of Inquiry regarding the suspended FICAC Commissioner, Barbara Malimali. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed that while he has discussed the matter with Puleiwai, the Government has not yet presented her with the options outlined in the report.

Prime Minister Rabuka explained that he has merely asked Puleiwai to be prepared to make a decision once the Government is ready to present recommendations based on the COI findings. Rabuka addressed inquiries about the situation during a recent event, stating, “The Government has not offered her the options.” Despite attempts by local media to reach Puleiwai for comments about her intentions to return to Fiji, she has not provided further statements.

In a prior interview, Puleiwai expressed her desire to return and serve her country again while indicating she is awaiting a response from the Prime Minister. In the backdrop of this political uncertainty, the Prime Minister also noted his overwhelming schedule, having faced considerable public scrutiny amid the dismissal of key legal figures.

The potential reinstatement of Puleiwai has garnered positive remarks from opposition MP Jone Usamate, who views her return as a step forward. Usamate emphasized that Puleiwai’s willingness to serve again underscores the importance of maintaining independent and impartial institutions, aligning with the Opposition’s call for governance based on merit rather than political convenience.

This current situation presents an opportunity for Fiji’s governance structures to enhance accountability and public trust, especially concerning FICAC’s operations amid ongoing efforts to address corruption within the country’s institutions. Puleiwai’s anticipated return is viewed as a crucial factor in fostering a robust anti-corruption framework, ultimately benefitting Fiji as it navigates these challenges.
