Opposition MP Mosese Bulitavu has expressed that former MPs from FijiFirst attribute the downfall of former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama to the influence of former Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. Bulitavu responded to remarks made by Bloc 16 and Opposition MP Jone Usamate, who criticized Sayed-Khaiyum as a hypocrite. According to Bulitavu, this criticism indicates a shared discontent among members of the G16 in Parliament towards Sayed-Khaiyum, showcasing their desire to distance themselves from him politically.

Bulitavu noted that many of the senior ministers from the previous FijiFirst administration provided valuable advice to Bainimarama but were frequently dismissed by Sayed-Khaiyum. He pointed out that the current Coalition government allows individual Ministers to present their own Bills, a stark contrast to the previous regime where Sayed-Khaiyum, in his capacity as Attorney-General, dominated this process by presenting all legislative proposals.

He remarked that some believed Sayed-Khaiyum encouraged Bainimarama to ignore the Military Council’s counsel. Furthermore, Bulitavu acknowledged the current military leadership’s commitment to restoration and reconciliation, which he claims was neither supported nor endorsed by the former Prime Minister due to what he deemed misguided advice.

In closing, Bulitavu commended Usamate for his forthrightness in speaking as an independent MP and as the Opposition Whip, emphasizing that Usamate’s statements reflect a collective sentiment within the opposition.

This discussion highlights the ongoing political tensions in Fiji and the complexities of leadership dynamics in government. It showcases the importance of communication and collaboration among leaders to ensure informed decision-making for the future of the nation. As Fiji moves forward, it is hopeful that these lessons will culminate in a stronger political discourse and a government that prioritizes unity and collective wisdom.
