Fiji’s Supervisor of Elections, Ana Mataiciwa, has lodged a police complaint against Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner Barbara Malimali. The complaint, filed on November 28 with Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew, accuses Malimali of abuse of office, as well as intimidation and harassment of witnesses.

Acting Commissioner Chew confirmed the submission of the report, stating that investigations are currently underway. This complaint is part of a broader inquiry conducted by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) concerning Malimali’s actions during her time as Chair of the Electoral Commission. Additionally, Malimali’s appointment is under scrutiny from an ongoing Commission of Inquiry.

FICAC has been approached for comments regarding the situation.

This incident highlights ongoing issues related to governance and accountability within Fiji’s electoral system. As investigations proceed, there is hope that this scrutiny may lead to improved transparency and integrity in public office, ultimately enhancing the trust of the Fijian people in their electoral processes. It is essential for officials to uphold the rule of law and foster an environment where justice prevails, ensuring that such allegations are taken seriously and addressed thoroughly.
