The Coalition Government in Fiji is experiencing divisions over its nominees for the role of President of the Republic. Reports indicate that both the Social Democratic Liberal Party and the National Federation Party are advocating for an extension of the current president, His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Katonivere.
Alternative candidates proposed include Tui Nadi Ratu Vuniyani Navuniuci and the Vunivalu of Nukunitabua, Ratu Naulu Mataitini. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, in an interview, refrained from revealing his party’s nominee, noting that concerns regarding the nominees had been communicated to him by the Speaker earlier in the day. He announced that he had retracted his nomination, emphasizing the need to address the uncertainties surrounding the candidates.
In today’s parliamentary session, the agenda included the nomination and acknowledgment of the appointment of the President of Fiji. Iowane Naivalurua, the leader of the bloc of nine, commented that while they support matters of natural interest, the Government had yet to disclose their preferred candidate for support. He acknowledged the political maneuvering but stated he was not fully informed about the names circulating.
The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, did not provide a response to inquiries.
