Political Turmoil: Can Fiji Trust Its Leaders Again?

Savenaca Narube, the leader of the Unity Fiji Party and former Governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji, has urged the government to address its internal issues. He expressed concern over reports of factions within the government and Cabinet seeking to form a new political party, suggesting that such moves would not resolve the existing leadership and economic challenges facing the nation.

Narube’s comments followed Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s disclosure that he had been informed of divisions within his party, including members of his Cabinet contemplating a split to establish a new party in 2026. He emphasized that the focus should not be on the political parties themselves but rather on the integrity of the party leadership.

He criticized politicians who he claims prioritize power over the public and compared the actions of some political leaders to merely changing their appearance without changing their underlying motives. He highlighted how politicians lacking principles and driven by self-interest could repeat past mistakes, urging voters to remain cautious.

Narube lamented the erosion of public trust in politicians over the past twenty years and called on voters to be discerning in the upcoming elections. He encouraged the electorate to choose leaders capable of transforming the economy, reducing poverty, managing living costs, uniting various communities, ensuring safety, and combating high-level corruption. He stressed the importance of electing trustworthy leaders in the 2026 elections.
