In the wake of Lynda Tabuya’s dismissal as Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has expressed approval of the Prime Minister’s decisive measures. However, he has raised alarming concerns regarding possible criminal behavior and the potential for a cover-up involving both the former Minister and FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali.

Seruiratu pointed out that Tabuya had previously asserted her divorce from Robert Semaan in 2016, which exempted her from declaring his assets. Yet, recent revelations suggest they may still be married, prompting questions about her honesty and transparency—qualities essential for any public servant.

He remarked on the emergence of a private video involving Tabuya, which she claims is a personal matter with her husband. However, this declaration contradicts her earlier statement about her marital status, further undermining her credibility and that of her leadership. As Co-Chair of the National Taskforce to Address Pornography in Fiji, her situation is particularly compromising, he noted. Seruiratu emphasized that her integrity is crucial for the task force, which is dedicated to combating pornography and safeguarding children from online exploitation.

Moreover, he voiced concerns about Commissioner Malimali closing the investigation based on what could be misleading information, suggesting that Tabuya’s influence might have played a role in this decision. He stressed the importance of maintaining the integrity of anti-corruption institutions, free from external pressures.

Seruiratu is seeking clear answers regarding Tabuya’s marital status and the possible influence she may have exerted on Malimali to halt the investigation. He asserted that her actions have tarnished not only her former position but also the public’s trust in the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection.

He concluded by insisting that public officials should embody integrity, transparency, and accountability. To restore the public’s confidence, Seruiratu has called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the matter, stating his intention to bring this issue before Parliament for the appropriate attention it warrants.

This situation presents an important opportunity for reinforcing the values of integrity and accountability in public service, which, if addressed effectively, can lead to a stronger governance framework in Fiji. By calling for an investigation and demanding transparent leadership, the Opposition Leader aims to restore trust, ultimately benefiting the citizens of Fiji.
