Minister for Climate Change Mosese Bulitavu has criticized Opposition MP Sanjay Kirpal, emphasizing that Kirpal’s recent actions will not change public perception of his betrayal. Following Tuesday’s parliamentary vote, which saw Kirpal initially agreeing to back a bill to allow public consultations, he has not returned to Parliament. Bulitavu expressed disappointment on social media, stating that Kirpal implied he would support the bill during a conversation with the Prime Minister, but has since failed to uphold that commitment.

In contrast, Bulitavu pointed to fellow Opposition MP Rinesh Sharma, who returned after discussing his change in stance with his family. He characterized Kirpal’s absence and failure to communicate his decisions as shameful, claiming that it reflects poorly on his integrity.

This incident highlights ongoing tensions within Fiji’s Parliament, particularly following Kirpal’s decisions to abstain from recent votes, impacting the Constitution Amendment Bill 2025. The political climate has been described by some observers, including former officials, as increasingly hostile, depriving the legislative process of the respectful discourse essential for effective governance.

Notably, Kirpal’s recent attempts to promote forgiveness rather than file complaints against fellow MPs suggest a desire to foster more constructive dialogue within the opposition, despite the friction surrounding their recent votes. This reflects a broader need for civility in political discussions, in the hopes of cultivating a healthier democratic process in Fiji.

The current situation presents challenges but also an opportunity for enhanced dialogue and reconciliation among lawmakers, underscoring the potential for progress in Fiji’s governance as diverse viewpoints continue to emerge within its political arena.
