Independent MP Sachida Nand has criticized his former colleagues in the Opposition for using manipulative tactics aimed at gaining political advantage during sensitive situations, specifically in light of the recent damage to the Holy Ramayan at the Vunicuicui Shiv Mandir in Labasa. Nand, a member of the G11 Bloc, believes it is crucial for Fijians to address such matters with dignity and accurate information.
In an interview, Nand explained that he visited the temple to engage directly with the trustee, Suruj Narayan, and police handling the investigation. He clarified that there was no break-in or theft involved, as the financial offerings were untouched and equipment left undamaged. The disturbance was caused by stray dogs, whose presence was noted by paw prints and fur found around the sacred texts.
Nand expressed disappointment that some members of the Opposition, including Premila Kumar, Hem Chand, and Ketan Lal, chose not to gather accurate information before making inflammatory statements that suggested a rise in religious intolerance in Fiji. He pointed out their failure to visit the scene or speak with local representatives as a sign of irresponsibility, which he believes fosters division among the populace.
He condemned these politicians for promoting misinformation, stressing that such behavior does not support unity but instead creates mistrust among Fijians. Nand urged them to prioritize their roles as public servants and engage with the communities they represent to truly understand unfolding situations before speaking out.
Moreover, Nand reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering a society where religious freedom and tolerance are upheld. His call for more respectful dialogue among various faith groups highlights the need for cooperation in overcoming challenges and sticking to shared values of unity amid diversity.
This situation serves not only as a reflection of the current political climate but also as an opportunity for community leaders to engage in constructive discussions that could lead to a stronger commitment to mutual respect and understanding in Fiji’s diverse social landscape.
