Parmod Chand, president of the National Federation Party, has criticized Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry, labeling him a “self-professed champion of the poor.” This comment came in response to remarks made by Chaudhry during the Fiji Labour Party’s Annual Delegates Conference held in Nadi on Saturday, where Chaudhry accused the coalition government of lacking integrity, transparency, and accountability.

Chand pointed out Chaudhry’s controversial past, referring to his tenure as the unelected Finance Minister during Frank Bainimarama’s regime following the 2006 coup. He recalled that Chaudhry had once suggested that the public should simply accept the high prices of essential food items.

In contrast, Chand defended the coalition government, emphasizing that for the past 23 months, it has been working to restore the foundations of genuine democracy, accountability, transparency, and good governance—principles that he claims were dismantled during Chaudhry’s involvement in governance over an 18-month period.

Chand concluded his statements by suggesting that Chaudhry’s criticisms are unfounded, stating, “The likes of Mahendra Chaudhry can continue hallucinating.”

This exchange highlights the ongoing political tensions in Fiji, showing differing perspectives on governance and accountability. It also underscores the importance of continuing to build robust democratic institutions and practices, which ultimately benefit the citizens and their voices in the political arena.

Overall, while the discourse may be contentious, it reflects a vibrant democracy where ideas and criticisms can be freely expressed, aiming for improvement and accountability in government.
