Deputy Prime Minister and National Federation Party Leader, Professor Biman Prasad, has openly criticized Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu for expressing confusion over the absence of NFP and SODELPA MPs at a significant meeting regarding the Constitution Amendment Bill 2025. Seruiratu had questioned the government’s commitment to inclusivity, pointing out that key opposition members were not involved in the discussions facilitated by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.

Prasad clarified that the invitation for the meeting was sent directly to the Prime Minister and stressed that discussions among their coalition members occur internally. He dismissed Seruiratu’s claims as “totally confused” and urged the opposition to stick to their previous voting decisions regarding the amendment motion.

Despite the tension, Prasad acknowledged that Seruiratu’s call for reviews indicates a possible opportunity for further dialogue about the constitutional changes. This highlights the critical need for transparent communication in Fiji’s political arena, especially as calls from various opposition leaders grow for more clarity on government intentions to prevent public misunderstanding.

Seruiratu has previously voiced his concerns about the amendments, emphasizing the need for a clear understanding of the government’s direction before advancing any changes. Other opposition leaders have echoed this call, underscoring the importance of engaging with citizens to ensure that the contemplated reforms meet the needs of all Fijians.

As discussions surrounding the constitutional amendments progress, there remains a hopeful prospect for collaborative dialogue between the government and the opposition. Such cooperation could enhance Fiji’s democratic practices and foster a political climate that reflects the diverse goals of its populace. This situation presents a unique chance for both sides to come together in pursuit of meaningful reforms, demonstrating that despite divisions, there exists potential for unity in addressing the nation’s challenges.
