President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere is poised to secure a second term in office at the end of this month. The Parliamentary Business Committee has announced that Parliament will convene on October 31 at 11 am to appoint a new President.
Sources indicate that Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has nominated Ratu Wiliame for this position. Initially, Parliament was scheduled to nominate and appoint a President on October 3, with this item listed as number 4 on the Order Paper for that session. However, the agenda was postponed following Rabuka’s disclosure of a potential disagreement regarding the presidential nomination.
Rabuka subsequently asked the Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, to withdraw item number 4, mentioning some discomfort associated with his nomination. The Opposition has not revealed its stance on the presidential nomination as of yet.
