Lynda Tabuya, the recently removed Cabinet minister, is set to face a disciplinary committee from the People’s Alliance Party (PA) following her ousting by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka over the circulation of a private nude video. Rabuka, who also leads the PA, stated that this decision, although difficult, was taken to serve the best interests of the public.
The Prime Minister’s decision came after receiving multiple complaints from party founders and members, prompting the establishment of the Legal and National Disciplinary Sub-Committee. PA general secretary Sila Balawa acknowledged the growing frustration among party members, many of whom took to social media to voice their concerns.
Ms. Tabuya, in a response to the Prime Minister, defended herself, stating that the leaked video was intended solely for her husband, asserting that sharing private content between consenting adults is neither immoral nor illegal. Following Rabuka’s statement, she shared an optimistic post on Facebook, indicating resilience in the face of adversity, although it was deleted shortly thereafter.
The disciplinary process has been triggered under Section 27.5 of the PA constitution, which allows for investigations into complaints regarding misconduct. The committee is tasked with considering the matter sensitively, ensuring all perspectives are heard before reaching a conclusion.
This incident is not the first of its kind within the PA, as the party previously initiated a similar disciplinary hearing over a separate scandal involving Ms. Tabuya and another political figure.
The situation presents an opportunity for the People’s Alliance Party to demonstrate its commitment to integrity and the rule of law in handling internal issues. By ensuring due process, they can address member concerns and uphold the party’s public image.
In summary, the PA is navigating a complex situation that not only impacts Lynda Tabuya but also the party’s reputation and internal cohesion. How they handle this matter may influence their future credibility and effectiveness as a political entity.
