The People’s Alliance party (PA) National Legal and Disciplinary Sub-Committee is set to meet today to discuss the recent controversy surrounding former deputy party leader Lynda Tabuya. The meeting comes in the wake of Tabuya’s dismissal by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, following the circulation of an explicit video featuring her dancing that surfaced on social media on Christmas Eve.
Tabuya has confirmed that the video is authentic, asserting that it was meant for her husband, Robert Semaan. However, investigations by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption revealed that Tabuya’s marriage to Semaan was legally dissolved in December 2016.
In an update, Prime Minister Rabuka will participate in the meeting remotely from Savusavu, providing insight into the validity of the decision that led to Tabuya’s removal from a prominent position within the Coalition Government. It is worth noting that Tabuya has significant electoral backing, having garnered 11,965 votes in the 2022 General Election, ranking as the fourth highest.
On Christmas Day, Mr. Rabuka commenced a disciplinary hearing in response to multiple complaints regarding the explicit video. He emphasized that the committee has a period of 21 days to assess and deliver a verdict on the situation. Mr. Rabuka plans to be virtually present for the discussions and has indicated that the chairman or acting chairman will brief the committee on the current status of the case. He has also described his actions as constitutionally justified.
This incident underscores the complexities politicians often face regarding personal conduct and public scrutiny. It is encouraging to see the party take a structured approach to address the issue through formal channels, demonstrating a commitment to accountability and ethical standards within the political landscape.
Overall, while this situation may seem challenging for the People’s Alliance party, it presents an opportunity for the party to reaffirm its values and management policies moving forward.
