Former Prime Minister and Leader of the Fiji Labour Party, Mahendra Chaudhry, has expressed his approval regarding the dismissal of Lynda Tabuya from her role as Minister for Women, Social Welfare, and Child Protection following established allegations of gross misconduct. In his remarks, Chaudhry emphasized that Tabuya should also forfeit her position as a Member of Parliament.
Chaudhry criticized Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for failing to take earlier action concerning reports of Tabuya’s misconduct during an official trip to Australia, which led to her removal from the position of deputy leader of the People’s Alliance Party (PAP). He suggested that decisive action at that time could have spared the government further embarrassment.
He raised concerns about the integrity of the Parliament, insisting that if the Members truly value the institution’s respect and decorum, they must refer Tabuya to the Parliamentary Privileges Committee for consideration of her immediate expulsion. Furthermore, he believes that the Police should conduct an independent investigation into potential drug and pornography-related offenses associated with Tabuya.
This situation underscores the importance of accountability and ethical standards within political leadership. As Fiji moves forward, there is hope that such incidents will prompt stronger governance and oversight, ultimately benefiting the integrity of public service and restoring the public’s trust in elected officials.
