Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has stated that the recent reassignment of the Policing and Immigration ministerial portfolios is not linked to the ongoing investigation concerning unauthorized passport issuances. This decision follows the voluntary resignation of Pio Tikoduadua, the previous minister responsible for both portfolios, who stepped aside in November 2024 to facilitate a fair investigation into the matter.
The inquiry into the unauthorized passport issuance arose from allegations that a child associated with the Grace Road Church was granted a Fijian passport shortly before a scheduled flight. The child’s mother, who claims she endured eight years of mistreatment at the hands of the Grace Road group, has brought these serious allegations to light. In response, Grace Road has denied any wrongdoing, asserting that the claims are baseless.
During a recent media conference, Prime Minister Rabuka clarified that he has yet to review the results of the investigation and affirmed that the decision to reassign the portfolios to members of the opposition Group of Nine (G9), Ioane Naivalurua and Viliame Naupoto, was made independently of the ongoing inquiry.
This cabinet reshuffle signifies the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability. It reflects a proactive approach to maintaining effective leadership during challenging circumstances and may pave the way for reforms that improve public trust in governance.
As this situation continues to unfold, it highlights a critical juncture for Fiji’s political landscape. Should these investigations lead to meaningful changes, they could strengthen governance and the rule of law, ultimately benefiting all citizens. The Prime Minister’s actions, aimed at ensuring that the integrity of governmental processes is upheld, are a hopeful sign for a more transparent future in Fiji.
