As the 2026 General Election draws near, tensions are escalating between former FijiFirst allies Premila Kumar and Mosese Bulitavu. In a series of heated exchanges on social media, Kumar has labeled Bulitavu as a “party hopper” and “opportunist,” following his criticisms of her alleged support for the Opposition Leader’s new political movement. He pointed to her association with the financial struggles of FijiFirst, notably its substantial $700,000 debt.

Bulitavu, who recently assumed the role of Minister for Climate Change and Environment under the Rabuka-led government, has publicly criticized what he describes as FijiFirst’s poor financial management and lack of transparency in parliamentary matters. His remarks indicate a shift among former FijiFirst members toward new political routes after the party’s deregistration in July 2023.

In her defense, Kumar has brought attention to Bulitavu’s past association with former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, urging him to focus on his ministerial responsibilities instead of engaging in what she terms “political gossip.” This public dispute mirrors a broader trend of fragmentation within Fiji’s political scene, which has seen various factions emerge in the wake of significant political changes.

Earlier reports have noted that the dissolution of FijiFirst has led to the rise of factions, such as those led by Inia Seruiratu and Ioane Naivalurua. This evolving political environment highlights the complications stemming from these divisions, while also suggesting potential avenues for a renewed political engagement and greater accountability among different political entities ahead of the elections.

The confrontation between Kumar and Bulitavu exemplifies the shifting allegiances within Fiji politics, and it positions the unfolding dynamics as pivotal to shaping voter opinions as the election approaches. With the prospect of new political movements, there is reason for optimism that these changes may foster a more active electorate and insightful discussions on governance effectiveness and accountability.

Fiji’s current political landscape, although tumultuous, offers opportunities for revitalized dialogue and fresh perspectives, encouraging citizens to engage more deeply in the democratic process as they prepare for the upcoming elections.
