Independent MP Premila Kumar is facing calls from Minister for Climate Change Mosese Bulitavu to resign from the Opposition due to her alleged failure to support the Leader of the Opposition’s new political movement. Bulitavu expressed his concerns via social media, stating that Kumar should step down if she cannot affirm her backing for the movement that aims to distance itself from the past leadership of Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and Frank Bainimarama.

Bulitavu also criticized Kumar for what he perceives as hypocrisy. He noted that she voted against the pay increase for Members of Parliament but has since benefited from the increase, which has been in effect since last August. He directed similar comments towards Opposition MP Ketan Lal, who has also begun receiving additional allowances after previously opposing the salary hike.

In response to Bulitavu’s accusations, Kumar has argued that his claims lack validity and serves more as political posturing. She emphasized the importance of maintaining focus on governance rather than engaging in political mudslinging. Kumar believes that the focus should be on the performance of the government, which she argues has shown shortcomings in addressing crucial issues affecting citizens.

The political tension highlighted by the exchange between Kumar and Bulitavu reflects the broader shifts in Fiji’s political landscape. With the 2026 General Election approaching, the fractures as a result of former alliances dissolving — particularly following the deregistration of the FijiFirst party — could potentially lead to greater political engagement from voters as they navigate these changing allegiances.

The situation signals a complex political environment but also presents an opportunity for increased public discourse regarding governance and accountability. As various factions seek to redefine their identities and assert their positions, there is hope that it may foster a more engaged electorate, conducive to discussions about effective governance and policymaking strategies that prioritize the needs of the citizens.
