Mosese Bulitavu, an opposition MP, has accused former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum of using political maneuvers and diversionary tactics in response to lawmakers who voted against or chose to abstain from supporting pay increases earlier this year. Bulitavu challenged Sayed-Khaiyum’s stance, questioning his claim of moral superiority, especially after the former AG suggested that those opposed to the pay rise should contribute the funds to charitable organizations.

The opposition MP pointed out the contradiction in Sayed-Khaiyum’s position, noting that members of the G16 bloc—who also rejected the pay rise—are now reaping its benefits. He raised questions about Sayed-Khaiyum’s past, asking whether he had ever donated the surplus from his salary during his lengthy tenure in office, or if those funds were directed elsewhere without transparency.

Bulitavu further criticized Sayed-Khaiyum for failing to submit annual reports for his ministry during his time in office, whereas other ministers felt pressured to do so. He labeled Sayed-Khaiyum as ineffective, claiming he had neglected essential responsibilities since the establishment of the 2013 Constitution, particularly regarding the alignment of the Presidential Pension Act to reflect constitutional requirements.

In addition to these allegations, Bulitavu highlighted a recent audit disclosed by Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica, indicating significant waste of taxpayers’ funds under the management of Walesi, which is now under investigation by FICAC. He reminded the public that Sayed-Khaiyum held extensive responsibilities as a minister overseeing Communications and that the accountability for these financial missteps ultimately falls within his purview.

The MP pointed to further alarming disclosures from Acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo during a Tribunal hearing concerning the suspended Director of Public Prosecutions. Temo stated that Christopher Pryde’s receipt of unauthorized superannuation payments also occurred under Sayed-Khaiyum’s watch, raising concerns about governance during his administration.
