Opposition MP Semi Koroilavesau has announced his decision to retire from politics in 2026, opting not to contest the upcoming General Election as he approaches his 70th birthday. In a statement to the media, Koroilavesau said, “No, I will not stand. I will be 70, and I think it’s time to retire when I’m 70. There are younger people that can come and replace me.”

Koroilavesau has previously served as a Minister in the FijiFirst Government under the leadership of Bainimarama. His announcement comes on the heels of his recent appearance before a Commission of Inquiry that is investigating FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali.

As Koroilavesau prepares to step away from politics, there is an opportunity for fresh leadership to emerge, reflecting a natural transition within political spheres. This change opens the door for younger candidates to bring new perspectives and ideas to the forefront, which could be beneficial for the country’s future.

Overall, Koroilavesau’s retirement marks the end of an era, but it is also a chance for rejuvenation in the political landscape of Fiji.
