Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has officially removed Lynda Tabuya from her position as the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection within the Coalition Government. This decision comes in the wake of the leak of a nude video involving Ms. Tabuya, which attracted significant media attention.
In his announcement, Mr. Rabuka stated that despite the gravity of the decision, it was necessary for the welfare of the public the government serves. He confirmed that Sashi Kiran will be appointed to the role, effective upon her formal swearing-in as the substantive Minister by the President.
Mr. Rabuka emphasized the importance of upholding the Oath of Office and maintaining the expected standards of behavior for ministerial positions. “I have decided to exercise the power conferred upon me by Section 92(3)(b) of the Constitution to dismiss her as a Minister, with immediate effect,” he said. However, Lynda Tabuya will continue her role as a Member of Parliament.
This situation underscores the complexities and responsibilities associated with public office, particularly regarding personal conduct and its implications for professional positions. It also highlights the government’s commitment to maintaining high standards among its leaders.
In a positive light, the appointment of Sashi Kiran offers an opportunity for fresh leadership in the Ministry, which could lead to new initiatives and perspectives on issues affecting women and children in Fiji.
