Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has officially terminated Lynda Tabuya from her role as the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection within the Coalition Government. The announcement was made in a statement confirming that Sashi Kiran will take over Tabuya’s responsibilities moving forward.
This decision follows the recent leak of a compromising nude video involving Ms. Tabuya, reported widely on Tuesday. While Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized that this was not an easy decision to make, he stated it was necessary for the welfare of the public that the government serves. He confirmed that Ms. Tabuya will remain a Member of Parliament despite her dismissal.
In his statement, Mr. Rabuka mentioned the importance of upholding the standards expected of ministers and the implications of Ms. Tabuya’s conduct in light of her Oath of Office. Consequently, he invoked Section 92(3)(b) of the Constitution, which grants him the authority to dismiss her from her ministerial position, effective immediately.
This situation serves as a reminder of the high expectations placed on public officials and the accountability they must uphold. The appointment of Sashi Kiran as the new Minister promises a fresh perspective in addressing issues related to women and children in the country, providing an opportunity for continued progress despite recent challenges.
As the new minister takes office, there is hope for renewed focus and initiatives that will further enhance support for women and children’s rights and welfare in Fiji.
