Lynda Tabuya has been relieved of her duties as a Cabinet Minister, with Sashi Kiran stepping in as her replacement. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who cited recent events related to Tabuya’s conduct as the reason for the decision. The Prime Minister emphasized that he did not take this decision lightly, but deemed it necessary for the benefit of the people they serve.
While Ms. Tabuya has been dismissed from her ministerial role, she will retain her position as a Member of Parliament. The Prime Minister stated that Kiran will assume her new role as the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection following her swearing-in ceremony with the President.
This decision follows a formal inquiry initiated by the Prime Minister regarding an alleged inappropriate video of Tabuya that had been circulating online.
In a political landscape where accountability and ethical conduct are paramount, this change in leadership presents an opportunity for a renewed focus on the critical issues surrounding women, children, and social protection in Fiji. The appointment of Sashi Kiran can be seen as a step towards maintaining the standards expected in governance and fostering trust in public service.
