Fijian opposition leader Inia Seruiratu has praised Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for his firm stance regarding former Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Lynda Tabuya. However, Seruiratu expressed deep concerns over allegations of dishonesty and possible misconduct involving both Tabuya and the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), Barbara Malimali.

In his statement, Seruiratu highlighted a troubling discrepancy regarding Tabuya’s marital status. Tabuya had previously asserted that she was divorced from Robert Semaan since 2016, a claim that would exempt her from disclosing his assets. Nevertheless, recent admissions contradicted her claim, suggesting they might still be married, raising questions about her honesty and transparency—qualities essential for someone in public service.

Moreover, Tabuya’s assertion that a private video was merely a personal matter between her and her husband further undermined her credibility, especially given her previous declarations of being divorced. This situation, according to Seruiratu, compromises not only her integrity but also the credibility of her position as co-chair of the National Taskforce to Address Pornography in Fiji, an initiative dedicated to combating pornography and safeguarding children from online threats.

The opposition leader outlined concerns about Commissioner Malimali’s role, particularly concerning her decision to close the case based on potentially misleading information. He emphasized the necessity for an investigation to determine whether Tabuya exerted any influence over Malimali’s actions, which could threaten the integrity of Fiji’s anti-corruption institutions.

Seruiratu is advocating for a thorough and transparent investigation into these issues, stating that the citizens of Fiji are entitled to honest and accountable leadership. He plans to bring this matter to Parliament for further scrutiny.

Both Lynda Tabuya and Commissioner Malimali did not provide comments in response to Seruiratu’s allegations.

This situation highlights the importance of accountability and integrity in leadership positions, ensuring that public officials are held to the highest standards as they serve their communities. The call for a transparent investigation provides hope for restoring public trust and ensuring that those in power are responsible for their actions.
