Unity Fiji leader Savenaca Narube has raised significant concerns regarding the recent cabinet expansion led by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, which he estimates will cost taxpayers about $3 million. Narube pointed out that this financial burden will come from existing budget allocations, as confirmed by Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad.
He criticized the Prime Minister for supposedly prioritizing his political survival over the financial welfare of the public. Narube emphasized that the reshuffle has resulted in an already oversized cabinet now comprising 34 members, many of whom were not elected by the coalition parties, raising questions about the legitimacy of their appointments. He dismissed Rabuka’s justification for the reshuffle as an attempt to distribute workloads more effectively, arguing that the changes reflect self-serving political motivations.
The expansion has sparked considerable public dissatisfaction amid ongoing economic challenges that many Fijians face. Opposition figures like Premila Kumar and Mahendra Chaudhry have echoed Narube’s concerns, labeling the cabinet increase as unnecessary and a diversion of funds that could better serve critical public services.
Despite the backlash, Prime Minister Rabuka insists that the restructuring is necessary to improve governance, arguing that it will allow ministers to manage their responsibilities more effectively and focus on pressing societal issues. The government maintains that this reshuffle is essential for increased efficiency.
While the cabinet expansion has ignited controversy, there is cautious optimism that with thoughtful management and public accountability, these changes can lead to improved governance and better alignment with the needs of citizens. As the government navigates this political landscape, maintaining open communication and responsiveness to public concerns will be crucial for instilling public confidence and driving meaningful reforms that truly benefit the Fijian populace.
