Member of Parliament Mosese Bulitavu has expressed his support for the release of George Speight, the leader of a civilian coup, who was freed after being granted Presidential immunity. Bulitavu is the first member from the G9 group to comment on Speight’s release, which was approved following a review by the Mercy Commission.

Bulitavu stated, “He (Speight) has served his time! We need to move away from our past and seek restoration through reconciliation.” He emphasized that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces is leading the reconciliation process and described Speight’s release as a significant step in the right direction.

He also remarked, “Only a few of us politicians who have served time ourselves understand why a fully rehabilitated prisoner deserves a second chance.” Bulitavu called for society to change its perception of individuals who have committed crimes and to accept them back after they have gone through the rehabilitation process provided by the Fiji Corrections Service.
