The Leader of the Opposition (LoP), Inia Seruiratu, has strongly criticized the Fijian government for allegedly prioritizing its political ambitions during a recent Cabinet expansion, which added seven Members of Parliament from the Group of Nine (G9) as ministers and assistant ministers. The reshuffle, occurring last Friday, has raised concerns amidst a nationwide cost-of-living crisis that significantly impacts many Fijians.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has defended the inclusion of G9 members, asserting that it is within his prerogative as Prime Minister. However, Seruiratu expressed hope that Rabuka would leverage his enhanced political power to address vital national issues rather than focus solely on short-term political survival. He raised alarm over the government’s apparent disregard for taxpayers’ concerns, despite ongoing efforts from the Minister for Finance to reduce government wastage.
As the opposition, which now comprises 16 members referred to as the G16 bloc, Seruiratu made it clear that they will uphold their responsibilities diligently, providing robust critique and maintaining the integrity of democratic principles in Parliament. He questioned whether the Speaker would rectify seating arrangements and the status of the new G9 members, emphasizing the constitutional guidelines surrounding the opposition.
The current political landscape has evolved significantly since the deregistration of the FijiFirst party in July 2024, allowing former opposition members to operate independently within the government. This shift has introduced uncertainties regarding the interpretation of Fiji’s 2013 Constitution, particularly concerning the roles of independent MPs and the potential for abuse of political power as the country approaches the 2026 general elections.
In summary, while the recent Cabinet reshuffle has illuminated significant governance concerns, it simultaneously offers an opportunity for meaningful discussions about necessary constitutional reforms aimed at bolstering transparency and accountability. As Fiji navigates this transformative political phase, there is a hopeful outlook that these developments may lead to strengthened democratic values and governance that truly serves all citizens’ interests.
