Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has raised concerns about the internal dynamics of The People’s Alliance following Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s nomination of Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu for the Presidency. When asked by this newspaper, Mr. Seruiratu inquired if this decision stemmed from “vanua politics.”
He pointed out that the controversies surrounding the announcement of the PM’s nominee indicate political maneuvering within various factions of the PA, which is the dominant party in the Coalition Government. Mr. Seruiratu noted that it has become apparent who holds influence within the PA. Originally, the party’s nominee was the Tui Nadi, approved unopposed by the PA executive committee, but this was rejected by the party leader, who favored the current President for another term.
On the day of a recent Parliament sitting, Mr. Seruiratu stated that concerns were raised about the PM’s nominee, resulting in the withdrawal of the discussion from the agenda. Shortly after, the PM declared that the concerns had been resolved and that Ratu Wiliame Katonivere would remain his nominee. However, this decision changed again, raising questions about possible underlying issues or the influence of “vanua politics.”
Mr. Seruiratu pointed out that the PM claimed the latest nominee was chosen by the parliamentary Caucus of PA, leaving uncertainty about the initial nomination of the Turaga Tui Nadi for President.
