Political Leaders Demand Safety Assurance for Whistleblower

Political party leaders are urging Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to personally guarantee the safety of former FICAC acting deputy commissioner Francis Puleiwai. Unity Fiji leader Savenaca Narube expressed concern that Ms. Puleiwai should not have to fear for her well-being. Supporting this sentiment, Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry emphasized that while the Prime Minister can provide assurances, it is crucial for him to also secure support from fellow ministers and government agencies.

Chaudhry stated that the Prime Minister cannot offer such guarantees without backing from other government branches. He suggested that Mr. Rabuka engage with Ms. Puleiwai to discuss her concerns and necessary steps for her safety. Chaudhry highlighted the importance of addressing issues related to Ms. Puleiwai’s recent FICAC appointment and her ongoing investigations into seven Cabinet ministers reported by the Supervisor of Elections.

Narube pointed out the distinction between national safety and the safety of whistleblowers, asserting that it is vital for Ms. Puleiwai, and the public, to be assured of her safety should she choose to return. Chaudhry remarked that whistleblower safety has not been guaranteed in the past, with people feeling vulnerable due to FICAC being used against government critics. He also raised concerns about Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica’s discussions with Ms. Puleiwai regarding his own case, which he felt was not reassuring.

Both leaders concurred on the necessity of a Commission of Inquiry, with Narube stating that those involved in the situation need to be thoroughly questioned. He stressed that to uphold transparency, the findings of the inquiry should be made public.
