Former SODELPA general secretary Lenatasi Duru has recently joined forces with members of the G16 Opposition to explore the creation of a new political party. This decision follows Duru’s resignation from SODELPA in December 2022, prompted by the party’s decision to form a coalition with The People’s Alliance and the National Federation Party (NFP).

Duru has expressed concerns over the current Coalition government, particularly the integration of former FijiFirst members into ministerial roles. He highlighted the ongoing challenges and political maneuvering necessary for maintaining government stability, stating that the Prime Minister must secure his position amid continual threats to the Coalition. “Where the Prime Minister is coming from, he needs to secure his position, especially with Government constantly under threat,” Duru noted.

Reflecting on SODELPA’s sacrifices during the coalition negotiations, he raised questions about the leadership’s strategy and priorities moving forward. “We are trying to offer something different. Politics is a game where you play your cards and play them right,” he emphasized.

In responding to the iTaukei community’s concerns about unmet expectations under the FijiFirst regime, Duru indicated that the new party aims to address these issues comprehensively through its forthcoming manifesto and constitution. He stressed the importance of effectively utilizing the resources and financial gains accumulated under previous administrations, ensuring the interests of the people are prioritized.

Duru’s initiative parallels the efforts of other members within the G16, including Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu, who have also announced plans to form a new political party.
