Opposition MP Mosese Bulitavu has suggested that former FijiFirst MPs attribute the downfall of the ex-Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama to the influence of former Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. In response to Bloc 16 and fellow Opposition MP Jone Usamate’s recent criticism labeling Sayed-Khaiyum a hypocrite, Bulitavu stated that this illustrates a general disdain for Sayed-Khaiyum among the members of the G16 in Parliament, indicating they prefer to distance themselves from him politically.

Bulitavu further explained that many senior ministers from the previous FijiFirst administration had consistently provided solid advice to Bainimarama but felt their suggestions were often dismissed by Sayed-Khaiyum. He pointed out a notable difference in the current Coalition government, where individual Ministers are allowed to present their own Bills, contrasting with the previous administration. Under Sayed-Khaiyum’s tenure as Attorney-General, Bulitavu argued, he dominated the legislative process by presenting all Bills, overshadowing the role of line Ministers.

Additionally, Bulitavu remarked on the current military leadership’s aim to foster restoration and reconciliation, a direction he claims was contrary to the views of the former Prime Minister, influenced by misguided advice. He commended Usamate for his forthrightness, noting that his remarks reflect a strong voice representing the independent MPs and the Opposition Whip.

In summary, Bulitavu’s statements highlight a growing discontent within the ranks of the former government regarding past leadership dynamics and decision-making practices, as the current coalition seeks a different approach toward governance and unity.

This unfolding political discussion demonstrates the evolving landscape in Fiji’s political arena, showcasing the desire for a more open dialogue and reassessment of leadership influences that may shape the future direction of the government.
