Opposition MP Alvick Maharaj has urged the Prime Minister to halt the overseas travel of Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh, claiming that Singh’s recent behavior has shamed both himself and the nation. Maharaj stated in a point of order that Singh’s actions and Facebook posts have caused significant embarrassment to the country and disrespected the efforts of diligent civil servants.

Maharaj labeled Singh’s conduct as inappropriate and called for him to issue both a verbal and written apology in Parliament. He also suggested that Parliament should discuss the possibility of stripping Singh of his ministerial position.

In response to Maharaj’s statement, the Minister for Women emphasized that the matter should be addressed when the accused MP is present to defend himself. She encouraged Maharaj to collaborate with his parliamentary group to ensure Singh’s attendance.

The Speaker of Parliament ruled that the issue brought forth by Maharaj cannot be discussed until Singh is present, reinforcing the principle of natural justice that allows the accused the opportunity to respond to any allegations against them.

This exchange highlights the accountability expected of public officials and the importance of upholding decorum within the parliamentary process. It serves as a reminder that public office comes with responsibilities, and actions that contradict the values of good governance may lead to calls for greater oversight.

As the situation develops, it remains essential for all parties involved to engage in constructive dialogue that upholds the integrity of the government and the expectations of the citizens it serves.
